The past week was an odd one, leaving me at times, wondering exactly what day it was! Hubs managed to make it home late last week Tuesday, just before the first snowstorm hit. I wasn’t sure his flight would even happen, as my phone was pinging with alerts. Thankfully, he made it home. Had his flight been scheduled for Wednesday, it wouldn’t have happened as no one was coming in or going out of our small airport.
Wednesday, we were hit with over a foot of snow, and we lost power for most of the day. I’m not complaining, though, because I read that some people were without power for 50+ hours. I’m sure there were many Thanksgiving dinners delayed as a result. On account of the nasty weather, I had the day off from work. Sure was nice that Hubs was home, so I wasn’t alone during the storm. Between the two of us, we were also able to keep up with the snow clearing, so that saved us the cost of having the driveway plowed. At $45 a push (we have a long driveway), that can add up quickly.
Thanksgiving was quiet, which is the way I prefer a holiday to be. I kept dinner simple, with just a turkey and a couple of side dishes. Since our oven isn’t working, I used a roaster for the first time. The week before, I managed to get one for $19, after an in-store coupon. The turkey turned out moist and tasted good, so this was a workable solution. I also have a small toaster oven (I’ve had it for years), which works well for smaller items. Replacing the oven isn’t a huge priority for me right now since, in the future, we want to remodel the entire kitchen.
We ventured out to town on Friday afternoon. Our first stop was to the Walmart vision center. A few weeks ago, Hubs dropped his glasses, and they were badly scratched. Since the glasses were less than a year old, I knew the prescription was still good. What I didn’t know was that they were under warranty. I don’t remember adding that, but I guess we must have. New lenses were ordered and should be here in the next week or so. Come January, Hubs will again have vision coverage (I only signed him up for that), so he will get new glasses. Hopefully, his prescription won’t change much, so he can use his current ones (with the new lenses!) for a backup pair.
After the vision center, we went to Midas. I had noticed a smell coming from the front end of my car. One of the brakes is likely freezing up, causing it to get hot. They said it was still safe to drive until it can be serviced. I took their earliest available appointment, which is tomorrow. I do know that since Midas did the brake job on the car, the pads have a lifetime warranty. As for the rest of the repair, it is still cheaper to maintain this car than replace it.
Another stop was for Hubs to get his shingles vaccine. It is now given in two doses, and this was his second one. Our insurance covered 100% of the cost, so nothing out-of-pocket.
Our last stop in town was to Best Buy for my new TV. After much deliberation, I ended up getting a larger screen (50 inch), so I can watch without wearing my glasses. At first, it seemed huge for the bedroom, but now I love it! My intention was not to spend more than what we had in gift cards, but we did go over by $120. In the few nights I’ve had the TV, my nights of dealing with my RLS are now a bit more tolerable.
It was back to work for me on Saturday. I forgot my pc, which was a bit of a bummer since the kiddo took a long nap. He is such a stinker when it comes to sleeping. He sure has come a long way from the tiny baby I first met just shy of two years ago! He still gets most of his nutrition via a g-tube, which is the primary reason they still have me care for him.
Hubs was supposed to fly out on Sunday. On account of another nasty storm dropping well over a foot of snow, his flight didn’t happen. Of course, the flight didn’t get canceled until after we had already sat at the airport for over five hours. The airline first delayed it several times before finally making that call. The roads were so bad it took us two hours to get to the airport and the same amount of time to get home. Then it was back to clearing this second round of snow. Talk about a tiring day!
Monday it was back to the airport. Hubs did make it to Chicago, but his flight to Albany was canceled until today! Thank goodness his company pays for corporate lodging, so no cost for him to check into a hotel for two nights. I was asked to work (I’m usually off on Mondays) so after dropping Hubs off at the airport, that’s what I did.
Yesterday was a usual workday, but since I worked on Monday, I wasn’t needed today. As of right now, my schedule should return to normal tomorrow ~ that is, other than starting my day with a trip to Midas!

Wow, I haven’t lived in snow since I was about 8 and we lived in New York so it is unbelievable to me what you have to deal with!!!! Just stay safe!!!! We were supposed to go to Lake Tahoe for Thanksgiving (SIL rented a cabin), but the weather was bad so we ended up staying home and having fondue which was actually fun. We made our turkey dinner the next day which was also nice :). We lived without an oven for over a year – there are so many other options it just isn’t a rush….the dishwasher however……

Enjoy NOT having snow! Lol Our area has already seen over 4 feet. On the bright side, it does compact down. Smart to stay home. I’ve been on that road from your town to Lake Tahoe and I know it can be dangerous. I’ll need to print your comment. I’ve been telling Hubs for almost 30 years that we need a dishwasher.

My oven broke down one Thanksgiving about 6 years ago. We bought a roaster and I even baked Christmas cookies in it. We didn’t replace the oven for about 2 years, I hated to spend the money, the old oven wasn’t more than 2 years old.

I may need to see all what my new roaster can do. I’m with you on not wanting to spend the money, but goodness, one would think an oven should last longer than 2 years! The one we have is original to our house which was built in the early 90s.
