An update on life, bills, goals, plans and reflections

October was a challenge!

Life:  I’ll try my best to keep my summary brief!  As of right now, Hub plans to return to work next week.  I left this entirely up to him as only he can determine how he feels.  The surgeon said 1-4 weeks, and this would put him at two weeks post-op.  I have been spending more time working my FBA business (more on this in another post) and am seeing some positives in that area.  The last two days of October, however, were not kind as I dealt with a nasty migraine.  Thankfully that is now gone, and I can get back to life!   [Read more…]

This is a test

I give our roof an A+!

Well, the 5 inches of snow never materialized, but we certainly have had a lot of rain.  In fact, it hasn’t quit since starting last evening.  After coming home to a leaky roof on Tuesday, this rain should have had me reaching for buckets.  Although I obviously don’t know what is going on underneath the shingles, I can say that we have not had one single drip inside the house.  I should probably be knocking on wood for even typing this.  My hunch is that the leak we experienced had something to do with the driving force of the rain (it was wicked!) and the flashing around the clearstory windows.  For the time being, I’m just glad the rain remains outside.  A repair will still need to be done, but given the time of year, other than try to prepare, there really isn’t much of anything we can do about it right now.   [Read more…]

Damage Control

October 26, 2017 By: Lucy10 Comments

Trying to “fix” what I can.

Why did my sister-in-law need to spill the beans and tell my Hubby (her brother) that he would feel worse the day after his surgery?  While I certainly knew this, my Hubby didn’t seem to. That was, until she clued him in.  Ugh!  It wasn’t that I was dishonest with the Hubs, he just never asked!  I figured it would be best for him to keep thinking he would be on the mend sooner, rather than later. You know, a mind over matter sort of thing.  Enter the need for some damage control. [Read more…]

The storms of life

October 25, 2017 By: Lucy14 Comments

When it rains, it pours.

First of all, many thanks again for your prayers and well wishes for my Hubby.  His surgery went very well and it was (as I suspected) indeed a hernia.  The protruding area thankfully turned out to not to be intestinal, but simply fatty tissue which the surgeon opted to remove.  Personally, I felt Hubby should have been able to keep the fat as he is already very thin!  Lol  No mesh was needed for the repair, only a few sutures.  While he can’t lift anything greater than 20 pounds for 4 weeks, the doctor left it up to him as to when he might feel ready to go back to work.  As his job does require some lifting, we will just need to see how quickly his body heals as to when he goes back to work.  We do need the income but I think it would be best not to push it as the potential of further injury is very real.   [Read more…]

Waiting

What better time to blog?

3:30 AM sure came early.  I’m not quite so sure that going to bed a little earlier actually helped either us.  I don’t think either of us slept that well.  I think it is only natural to have a few worries, no matter what procedure is being done.  Then there was the worry of oversleeping.   [Read more…]

Money before health

Or at least that is the way the hospital makes one feel.

Apparently, the hospital where my Hubby is going for his hernia repair wants to know they will be paid.  Go figure. Why can’t they understand that we are trying to get out of debt and not add to it?  Alas, I do get it.  They need to be paid and it is our responsibility to see that they are paid.    [Read more…]

Life with the Hubby

October 20, 2017 By: Lucy12 Comments

A lot of this and that.

Yesterday had me up early (4:30) so I could put in a few hours at my part-time job.  I wanted needed to get this accomplished before heading to the city with Hubby for his appointment with the surgeon.  I also needed to stop at my bookkeeper’s office to drop off info for my business.  She generally devotes one day a month to my business so I had to get that to her.  Given that we would pass right by her office, this saved me a couple of bucks rather than simply dropping a fat envelope off in the mail.   [Read more…]

Before coming to our standstill

October 18, 2017 By: Lucy8 Comments

What we did accomplish prior to Hub’s health issue.

With Hubby being home the last week, I was a bit lax about updating the blog.  Since we don’t usually have much time together, any time we do get usually becomes my first priority.  Prior to coming to a sudden standstill over Hub’s newly diagnosed hernia, I had intended on writing a complete update.  As with many things in life, plans often change.  Anyhow, Hubby now has an appointment with a surgeon tomorrow.  It was a little tough getting that one as they were booked until November.  Thankfully there was a cancellation.  While not what I would consider a true emergency in the sense of urgency (or at least not yet!), I also would not have felt comfortable with him returning to work without further evaluation.  The last thing we need is for him to be several states away and have things turn ugly. Health before debt

Avoiding strangulation.

“So, what do you think this lump on my side might be?”  And so our day began.  After several days at home, Hubs was ready to head back to work again, but that all changed with his question.  After I took a look, he wasn’t going anywhere except to urgent care.  Seeing a primary physician would have been my first choice for him, but since he doesn’t have one (a topic for another day), urgent care it was.   [Read more…]

Rainy day, lazy day

October 7, 2017 By: Lucy14 Comments

Rain, rain, rain and more rain, our forecast for most of the day.

Rain makes for a perfect day to stay home.  For me, it also tends to make me feel a little bit on the lazy side.  It is days like these that I am ever so thankful that I no longer work a regular job.  For the last eight years of my nursing career, I primarily worked giving in-home care to kids on ventilators.  A rainy day, combined with eight hours of listening to the rhythmic lull of a vent, made it challenging to stay awake!  I never once fell asleep (wouldn’t dare given the acuity of care involved) but rainy days sure were tough!   [Read more…]

Taking the bull by the horns

Are sleepless nights making me even more aggressive towards our debt?  I think so!   As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, I have been experiencing a lot of sleepless nights over the amount of interest our debt is costing us.  I spent several daylight hours focused on how fast we could eliminate $3,806 worth of […]
