Another vet visit for our senior dog.
Today I brought our senior dog back to the vet yet again. Although he is eating on his own and walking much better, I could tell his ear was still bothering him. I was thankful for a reduced rate for the recheck visit (saving us $15) but even with that, the bill was still $132. The poor boy needed yet another antibiotic for his ear. The vet also prescribed eye ointment for a swollen gland, which we are hoping isn’t melanoma. Both our dogs are scheduled to go for their annual visit next month, at which time the vet will recheck the issues our sickly dog has been having. My husbands standard reply…it’s only money.
I will admit to cringing just a bit when handing over our debit card to pay for this vet visit, but I know my husband is right. The issues this dog is currently having are treatable and not a matter of heroics. At 13+ years of age, that is where I would have to draw the line and say no more. To an extent I view these dogs as being in the hospice stage of their lives and we will continue to provide for them as such.
With not having $132 designated for sick dogs, our snowball will take the hit as to avoid taking it out of our emergency fund. I’ll look at the positive in that at least we have a snowball and our emergency fund remains intact. And with that, life goes on!

Sorry to hear about your senior dog. I hope the new meds help. We recently lost our beloved little dog to complications after a surgery. We don’t regret a penny we spent on him, we had opened and saved a separate emergency fund for him back when we got him. It gave us some piece of mind knowing it was there.
Good luck on your journey.

Thank you so much. I know not everyone understands. So smart of you to have a separate emergency fund in place for your dog’s needs. So sorry for your loss.

Hope your dog is feeling better soon. and like you said, at least you had the snowball to take the funds from, not your savings and definitely not your credit card! I just started setting a small amount aside each month for a “pet” savings. One of these days our two will need that extra costly medical care and I hope to have some savings for it.
OneFamily recently posted…Tuesday that feels like Monday

Thanks! Much like humans, elderly pets will ultimately have more expensive medical needs as well. Once I start my seasonal job, we plan on using some of what I earn to do just what you are doing and set aside some extra funds to cover these expenses.

I hope your buddy starts to feel better. Hubby is right for the joy they brings us it is only money. I need to get a separete account set up for mine, I looked at pet insurance and because she is 9 its crazy expensive. I may however get some fro the 3 yo. It does pay for itself

That is an excellent idea to have a separate account for our fur babies. Wish I had the insurance. Would have saved us a lot of money over the years.
