Our final payment cleared and the account is now officially closed!
Today was the day to make the call and say good riddance to American Express. They served their intended purpose (to reduce interest), but they were a major thorn in my side. If you recall, after taking advantage of their zero percent interest offer, I dealt with quite a headache to get them to honor their agreement. In addition to talking with several customer service reps and an online chat rep, it still took almost three months for them to fix their problem of charging interest. The apology I received for their error meant nothing. As for the card itself, I had no intention of keeping it anyway and the grief they gave me only added fuel to my fire to do just so. Good riddance indeed, American Express!
The credit from being wrongly charged for a free month of Netflix appeared in my account. I was glad I didn’t take no for an answer and got the refund. I won’t say that it wasn’t aggravating to push for this, but at least it worked out in the end.
Since I felt I was on a bit of a roll this week, I also called and canceled a local store credit card that I haven’t used in well over a year. This particular card never carried a balance, but I still saw no purpose in keeping it around. While I realize that closing accounts can hurt my credit score, at this point, I’m not concerned. I feel my credit score served its final purpose when we completed the refinance on our house a month ago.
After I got out of work yesterday, Hubs and I took advantage of some free happenings in town. Since we don’t have an entertainment envelope, free is the keyword. Lol No shame in that, especially when digging out of debt!
Hubs suggested that I write a post about his $6.59 wedge of watermelon. All I’m going to say on that subject is I won’t ever ask for him to go pick up some fruit again…unless I specify what to buy. $6.59? Sheesh.
I have a four-hour shift with the preemie again today. Hoping I get paid today. We shall see.

Congratulations! American Express was our nemesis as well. And Theory, absolutely I can pay that off every month, in reality. We couldn’t.

Doesn’t it feel good to get rid of these credit cards? I know all too well about intentions of paying off our balance each month. Let’s just say that didn’t work out too well for us either.

Congrats on killing the American ‘Excess’ credit card! Very very very cool.

Thanks, Rhitter! You got that right about it being American Excess! I cannot wait until we are credit card free. The perks that many of these cards offer are simply not worth it (or at least not for me). I’ll continue to use cash.

Congratulations on kicking American Express to the curb. I started laughing about that watermelon. Did he get some asparagus water too?! LOL!!
Lucy says
Thank you! As for the asparagus water, I wouldn’t have put it past him to buy some if the store sold it. Ugh. Men. Lol

Thanks, Kim. And you are 100% correct about never letting a man go to the store…or at least not my Hubs!

American Express was the first card I got rid when I had the chance. I found that many stores don’t accept them because they charge them a heavy transaction fee.
I still have lots of credits cards which I accumulated due to their interest-free periods. So I am following your posts, since your journey an inspiration to what I want to achieve.

Thank you for your kind words. I can’t wait to dump more of our credit cards and will continue to do so as we pay them off! Keep plugging away. Getting debt free is so worth it!
